November was a wonderful time to visit the islands. Had the feel of already being there when we got on the plane. These tropical itineraries call for casual attire by day and country-club or elegant resortwear clothing by night. During the day, you'll need bathing suits, cover-ups, shorts, shoes that are comfortable for walking or hiking, and reef shoes, a must for the private island experiences, where rocks, broken bits of coral and sea cucumbers can make for an uncomfortable walk. Bug spray with DEET is also a necessity in the lush, tropical environment. You need dinner reservations for both La Veranda and Le Grill.
Deck Plans
Depending on the itinerary, our cruises can also take you to the untouched beauty of the Marquesas islands, diving into the world-renowned waters of the Tuamotu Islands and exploring the richness of the Cook Islands. For 20 years, Paul Gauguin Cruises has been the cruise specialist for the South Pacific. Each itinerary is meticulously planned, with every port of call an opportunity to discover the unique features of the surrounding area. Groups – either with a certain travel agent or affinity organizations – are common on Paul Gauguin.
Islands of the Marquesas & Tuamotus
The pool deck on Paul Gauguin seems small at first glance; the square pool doesn’t seem like it would fit the demand. But we found that it was never crowded, as people spent a lot of time off the ship snorkeling at various beaches or on excursions. The renovation improved the quality of the loungers not only at the pool deck but outdoor seating around the ship. Oddly, there’s no hot tub, which seems like a miss in a tropical destination where being outside is paramount.

These can be hard to get, so it’s advisable to plan out your meals in these restaurants ahead of time so you can book soon after you board. Because Le Grill is the only casual option and it’s usually full, room service is your only option on those nights when you return from excursions and just don’t want to deal with dressing up. Luckily, for women this can be as easy as throwing on a sun dress (no T-shirts or shorts for men at dinner anywhere other than Le Grill). Investment from Ponant has transformed the ship, both literally – a 2021 refurbishment touched almost every aspect of the 25-year-old vessel – and culturally.

We also run some awards programmes which give you an opportunity to be recognized for your achievements during the year and you can join this as a participant or a sponsor. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. In addition, average cruise prices are updated nightly. Engaging and interacting with locals throughout the Islands of Tahiti provide meaningful connections among people, and a deeper sense of place, culture, and history.
Their sense of happiness, joyfulness and wanting to please is very contagious. We did not partake in any Spa appointments but seemed to be a popular spot. We ignored the little casino on board and saved our money. We sat by the pool on Deck 8, in the water surrounded by water in every direction. Our one week flew by way to fast. We took home some information on the Moana which I believe starts the end of the year.

Besides the American items, we found French flavor and Pacific Rim options as well as fresh fish and healthy options. Our family all have some diet limitations not to mention trying to stay away from the stuff that makes the statement, everyone gains weight on a cruise. We were very happy with the open buffets so we could make our own choices of what and how much on our plate. We did eat in the specialty restaurants for the experience and they did not disappoint. As you mentioned to us, we made reservations as soon as we got on the ship and we had our choices of days and times. We partook in many shore excursions, all of which added to our fun and adventure.

Created in partnership with the French Polynesian government, this program provides consultations by the ship's doctors while in port, free transportation for the government's appointed doctors, and access to onboard hospital equipment. The 118 islands and atolls (ring-shaped coral reefs) of French Polynesia shimmer like a string of prized Tahitian pearls. Tahiti and the Society Islands have inspired generations of artists and writers seeking to capture their magical allure. Among countless others, Herman Melville, James A. Michener, Henri Matisse—and of course Paul Gauguin himself—were transfixed by these islands. New for 2024 are a 7-night More Society Islands & Tahiti itinerary and a 14-night Islands of the Marquesas & Tuamotus voyage.
If you love scuba or want to learn, you’ll be in good company (See the Activities tab for more on the ship’s scuba offerings). Because the ship is older, there are a wide variety of cabins, including those with portholes and picture windows, in addition to balcony rooms and a handful of suites. Balconies are on the small side in the standard veranda rooms. The indigenous entertainment troupe, Les Gauguines and Les Gauguins, add a special touch to Paul Gauguin.
These islands have been our home for more than 25 years and our expertise in revealing them with artful authenticity is unmatched. We offer five different Paul Gaugin cruises which all tour different parts of Fiji and each cruise has its own unique experience. Complimentary Tahitian blessing ceremonies hosted aboard The Gauguin add a dash of authentic romance and help to protect the region’s cultural traditions. Furthering our commitment, we recently launched our Taote Gauguin initiative.

She delivers travelers to intimate ports inaccessible to larger cruise ships, all the while providing a travel experience that is nothing short of luxurious. Once on board, guests enjoy newly-decorated spacious suites and staterooms (nearly 70% with private balconies), an onboard watersports marina, three dining venues, an extensive spa, and five-star service. Husband and I and our two grown daughters were on the August sailing of the lovely ship Paul Gauguin. We had two "E" Category staterooms, non balcony which was fine since we were not in the room all that much. The stateroom was actually larger than we expected, with lovely furnishings, colors, good towels and sheets. The best was our room steward, tip top and wanted to take him home with us, We were told it was not a full ship, sailing prior and sailing after ours was sold out but for some reason we had about 15 open staterooms.Food was delicious and good varied selection.
